Adele Marie Ribar was born September 24, 1917 to Wilbur and Marie Adele (McClair) Johnson in Detroit. After her mother passed away in the flu epidemic of 1918, she was adopted by her aunt and uncle, Grace Adair and Homer, in Cleveland. She attended Notre Dame High school, studying piano for 14 years. As a young woman, Adele taught piano, worked as a medical assistant, and cared for her soon-to-be nieces and nephews. She married Frank J Ribar on July 13, 1944 while he was on leave from WWII.
