DeJohn Funeral Homes Awards Eight Student Scholarships
Educational Scholarship Amount Increased for 2018
We are pleased to announce the eight local students we have awarded with our Ross Sr. & Carmella DeJohn Memorial Scholarship. It should also be noted that the scholarship has increased from $500 each student in 2017 to $750 each student for his or her college tuition or books in 2018.
Scholarships were awarded to Alex Weaver of Kirtland High School (attending Ohio University, Electrical & Computer Engineering); Rachel Imel of Brush High School (attending Xavier University, Mathematics); Shannon Biega of Mayfield High School (attending West Virginia University, Forensic Science & Spanish); Sofia Ayres-Aronson of Shaker High School (attending Emory University, Biology & Creative Writing); Shannan Lunar of Willoughby South High School (attending Miami University, Political Science Pre-Law); Jason Tysl of Chardon High School (attending Ohio State University, Engineering); Ava Thomas of Gilmore School (attending Yale University, Biology); and Veronica King of West Geauga High School (attending University of Toledo, Pre-Med/Biology).
These students have demonstrated the ideals of passion, respect and organization to be eligible for the Ross Sr. & Carmella DeJohn Memorial Scholarship. Students that demonstrate these qualities as they achieve their higher education will become our future community leaders.
“Congratulations to the Class of 2018. We wish each of these fine young men and women the very best and continued success in their future and to all their parents for their leadership and guidance throughout the years,” said Ross DeJohn Jr., Chief Executive Officer for DeJohn Funeral Homes.
In 1993 the DeJohn family, in conjunction with the family owned funeral home, established the scholarship in honor of Ross (Sr) and Carmella’s dedication to education. Ross Sr. served as Mayor of Mayfield Heights for over 28 years and during that time was very supportive of all school related issues including support for many school levies. More than $35,000 in scholarships has been awarded to deserving high school seniors living in Cuyahoga, Lake and Geauga counties.
Students may apply for the DeJohn Five Star Education Scholarship in early spring and the application may be downloaded from the DeJohn website. For more information on the student scholarship, visit www.dejohncares.com/scholarship.
