David Sanderson passed away on Friday, February 17 at Heather Hill Rehabilitation Center, joining his beloved wife, Joann, whom he deeply missed. The son of Vernon M Sanderson and Margie Diebold Baber, he was born on June 2, 1932 in Clarksville, TN. During his youth, the family moved to Detroit, MI and then to Youngstown, OH. He moved to Bainbridge Twp, OH in 2022 to be close to his daughters.
In 1950, he enlisted in the US Airforce serving in the Korean War. He was stationed in Japan as a radar operator. Upon his return to the US, he married Joann Kemesky on August 29, 1957 and was married 55 years until her death September 29, 2012. He was proud to attend night school, receiving his high school diploma in 1967 from North High, Youngtown. He worked for Youngstown Sheet and Tube, General Motors, Baber Auto Supply and retired in 1994 from Youngstown Steel Door as a quality control supervisor.
David was a lifelong car enthusiast. He enjoyed drag racing and building cars with his brother. He traveled to car shows, auctions, museums, and trade shows, amassing a collection of rare car literature and scale models that numbered in the thousands. He loved driving as well as riding his motorcycle. He enjoyed amusement park trips to Idora and Conneaut Lake parks with his family, and attending the opening of Disney’s Magic Kingdom in 1971. He used his carpentry skills, making furniture and decorations.
He was a member of St Joseph’s and St Charles’ Parishes in Youngstown, where he regularly attended mass. He will be remembered for his faith, love of family, and humbleness.
Survivors include his children, Carole Sanderson in Russell Twp (Norm Loescher) and Kathy Sanderson in Bainbridge Twp.; his companion cat Sparky; sister Patricia McElwain in Florida; sister-in-law Jean Wurst (Jim Reed) and ten nieces and nephews. Your Dad was a remarkable example of the greatest generation (or silent one). Hard-working, but loved his hobbies—sounds like someone else I know; the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. I’m sure you have great memories of life with your dad. Treasure them. Our condolences to you and your family.
