Dr. Shirey was a prince of a man and embodied my ideal of a Christian believer.
He was generous, kind, and humble.
I am so blessed to have attended church with him for over 25 years and been inspired by his loving example.
My mother frequently said, the Shireys were the best neighbors anyone could have. You helped our whole family make the transition to Cleveland easy. I have such fond memories of playing in the house on Belvoire Blvd. Both of your parents kept in touch with my parents & your dad wrote us the loveliest letter when my mom died. The world has lost a marvelous man.
Dear Karen and Kim, Your dad may have been the most distinguished person I ever have met. And! He may have been the kindest man of the twentieth century. Amy, Joe and I were lucky and privileged to live next door on Belvoir Boulevard. Love and sympathy!
I first met Earl when I came to the Clinic in 1960. He was the only fellow of Mason Sones at the time. He became Sones’ #1 partner, assisting him in tough cases and teaching coronary arteriography around the world and to the hundreds of visitors at the Clinic who came to learn the technic. He also became the major cardiology consultant to surgeons Donald Effler, Larry Groves and Rene Favaloro. He was also a close friend and supporter and entertained us regularly in his home with Jean, Karen and Kim.
Dr. Shirey was my cardiologist from birth through December 1978. I owe my life to God and Dr. Shirey who promised my parents he would do all he could to keep me alive and he did. He was a man of his word. Today at 64 I wish he knew I am alive and well. I will always think of Dr. Shirey as my Hero. A man of his word who was as caring and compassionate as my parents. Always loving, forever grateful to Dr. Earl K. Shirey. My belated condolences to his family.

He was one of my heroes. His consummate skills as a physician and total dedication to the welfare of his patients were unmatched. We will also miss his humility.
