
JAMES R. COSTABILE, JR., age 87, beloved husband for 59 years of Toni (nee Cistone); loving father of Jim (fiancee Donna Hasler), Greg (wife Carmel nee Lorenzo), and Lori; devoted grandfather of Nicky Evelyn (husband Steven), Chrissy, Dom, Celeste, Brianna, Gabriella, and Marco; cherished son of the late James and Carmela “Molly” (nee Palmieri) Costabile; dearest brother of Robert (wife Yolanda); treasured brother-in-law of Rosemary Rakovan (husband Richard, deceased) and Joseph Cistone (wife Kathy); dear uncle, great-uncle, cousin, and friend of many. U.S. Army Veteran.
Jim was born in Cleveland on January 31, 1935 and passed away on May 5, 2022. He graduated from East High School in 1953, and attended Ohio University in Athens. Jim worked as the Survey Engineer for Cuyahoga County. He lived in Mayfield Heights since 1953, previously of Cleveland. Jim had a strong Catholic faith, and as a member of St. Clare Catholic Church since 1966 he served as a eucharistic minister and was active with renewal activities, the church festival, Pre-Cana, and RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). In addition to his church, Jim was also very active in his community, including Knights of Columbus Gilmour Council #310, the Hillcrest Lions Club, and the Mayfield Heights Board of Zoning Appeals. He served as a high school track official and was involved with the Mayfield Athletic Boosters. Jim enjoyed golf, gardening, and Big Band music, and was an avid Cleveland sports fan. His travels and river cruises took him to Italy, Alaska, and Greece. He was social and friendly, as well as gentle and humble, and was easy-going, patient, and a great storyteller. Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and sibling, and he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Contributions may be made in memory of Jim to Hospice of the Western Reserve or St. Clare Catholic Church.
Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at 10 AM at St. Clare Catholic Church, 5659 Mayfield Rd. in Lyndhurst. Burial following with Military Honors at All Souls Cemetery. Family will receive friends to pay tribute to and celebrate the life of Jim at THE DeJOHN FUNERAL HOME & CELEBRATIONS CENTER OF CHESTERLAND 12811 CHILLICOTHE ROAD (Rt. 306, just south of Mayfield Rd.) MONDAY 4-8 PM.
