LAWRENCE J. “Larry” SWANEY age 92, beloved husband for 73 years of Catherine “Kay” (nee VonHof); loving father of Linda “Sue” Clough (husband James), Lawrence Jr. (wife Mary), Deborah Edelman, Michael, Sharon Sweigert (husband Rick), and the late Robert; devoted grandfather of Brian (Allison) Clough, Gregory (Jalaja) Clough, Scott (Sangeeta) Clough, Trina Swaney, Lindsey (Carl) Ramsey, Shaun Swaney, Marcia (Jason) Bailey, Stefanie Stastny (deceased), Michelle (Nicholas) Ovsenik, Ron (Shannon) Sweigert, Aimee Sweigert, and great-grandfather of 25; cherished son of the late Lawrence and Helen (nee McCabe); dearest brother of the late Robert and William; dear brother-in-law, uncle and great-uncle of many.
Larry was born October 2, 1930 in Cleveland, OH and lived in Chesterland for the past 45 years, after moving from Euclid. He died peacefully in his home July 19, 2023. Larry grew up in the Collinwood neighborhood, graduating from Euclid Central High School in 1948, and went on to attended Fenn College.
Larry was a proud member of Pipefitters Local #120 and their Retirees Club. They honored him as Irishman of the Year in 2015. He spent his career as a Pipefitter, and worked many years with Feldman Mechanical.
He enjoyed golfing and traveling, especially trips to Ireland, Spain, Morocco, and Hawaii, among many other places. He enjoyed being a fan of all Cleveland sports, loved regularly going to the YMCA in Geauga County, and occasional trips to the casinos.
Larry is remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Family and faith were important to him. He enjoyed spending time with his friends, especially the group at the Y. He always appreciated time in his yard and feeding the fish in his pond. He especially looked forward to cocktail hour with Kay and always enjoyed his Jim Beam. Larry will be deeply missed by all his family and friends and the favorite memories and stories will continue for years to come.
In lieu of flowers, contributions suggested in Larry’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday July 25, 2023 at 12 Noon at St. Anselm Catholic Church. Burial following at All Souls Cemetery. Family will receive friends to pay tribute to and celebrate the life of Larry at THE DeJOHN FUNERAL HOME & CELEBRATIONS CENTER OF CHESTERLAND 12811 CHILLICOTHE ROAD (Rt. 306, just south of Mayfield Rd.) MONDAY 3-7 PM.
