
VIDMAR, Mary, (née Whelan) RN, from Highland Heights, Ohio passed away peacefully in her sleep at age 90, on Sunday, March 7, 2021.
She will be sadly missed by her son John, sister Geraldine Kanter, (husband Marvin, deceased), daughter-in-law Caroline (née Coyle), nephews SJ Kanter, D.O. (Tammy, née Cuckow) in Columbus, Ohio, Steve Kanter, M.D., in Menlo Park, California, nieces Sharon Hanford (Charlie) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Hope Frate (Neo), great-nephews Cole Frate and Carson Frate in Chesterland, sister-in-law Jane Whelan (née Taylor) and her extended family and many close friends in the USA and in Ireland.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, John, her father Jack Whelan, mother Marie Whelan (née Griffiths), brother Joseph Whelan (wife Jean, deceased) and sister Jacqueline Whelan.
Mary was blessed with a rich life marked by her devotion to her family and her dedication to the medical profession as a registered nurse.
A graduate of the class of 1953 at St. Vincent Charity Hospital and Health Center School of Nursing, Cleveland’s first Catholic diploma school of nursing which was established in 1898, Mary dedicated her professional life to caring for others. She went on to become assistant director of nursing at Hillcrest Hospital and director of nursing at Shaker Medical Clinic where she looked after many of the Cleveland Browns football players.
A faithful parishioner at St. Paschal Baylon Catholic Church for over 55 years, Mary devoted countless hours as a volunteer at numerous charities and was a tireless participant in the Society of St. Vincent De Paul, providing a positive impact on the lives of so many in her community.
Mary was a founding member of the Pink Berets, a volunteer group of retired nurses who continued to provide care and compassion to patients at Hillcrest Hospital. An avid golfer for much of her adult life, Mary played many championship courses in addition to being an active member of the Manakiki Swingers Golf League in Willoughby Hills, OH.
A Celebration of Life Funeral Mass will be held at St. Paschal Baylon Catholic Church, 5384 Wilson Mills Road, Highland Heights, OH 44143 at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 11, 2021.
