NGUN OY WONG (nee Chan), age 86, a long-time resident of Richmond Heights, Ohio, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2023 with her daughter by her side in New York City, where she had been living the past several years. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Jack Wong, who died in 2017.
Ngun was born in China. She was married in Hong Kong in 1954 and came to the United States in 1957. She then worked various jobs as a seamstress and eventually worked at the Fisher Body Division of General Motors Corp. from which she retired after many years. She loved to bake and cook and enjoyed the challenges of perfecting popular Chinese dishes, making them better and more delicious. Once perfected, she enjoyed teaching her children and grandchildren her secrets, as well as creating videos and a cookbook with photos. She also enjoyed growing unique indoor plants, making beaded animals and figurines, and collecting coins.
She was a well-loved member of the Cleveland Chinese Christian Church, where she was very involved with the church community, donating her time as a seamstress and helping to cook delicious meals for various church functions. Her signature Char Siu Baos (roast pork buns), tapioca dumplings, and her orange sponge cake were especially popular, and she happily shared her recipes and techniques with eager church members who wanted to learn from her.
Ngun is survived by her children Hundy S. Louie (husband Check) of Virginia, Susan F. Wong of New York, Guy L. Wong (wife Karen) of Columbus, Ohio, and John K. Wong (wife Stacy) of California; grandchildren Timothy Louie, Jennifer Louie, Michael Louie, Carolyn Louie, Stephanie Wong Downing (husband William), Evan Wong and Merrick Wong; siblings Fung Oi Cham (husband Kar War) of Willoughby Hills, Ohio and Gam Mon Yee (wife Katherine) of Illinois.
Family will receive friends to pay tribute to and celebrate the life of Ngun at the DEJOHN-FLYNN-MYLOTT FUNERAL HOME OF WILLOUGHBY HILLS, 28890 CHARDON RD. (between Bishop Rd. and Rt. 91) on Friday, July 14, from 4–8 PM.
Prayers of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at 10 AM at the Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Crown Hill Memorial Park in Twinsburg, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Ngun’s memory to the Cleveland Chinese Christian Church, 27700 Emery Rd, Orange, Ohio, 44128.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
