Nola Vargo

Nola B. Vargo (nee: Flannery), age 85, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2017 at Heather Hill Care Community in Chardon. She was the devoted wife for 64 years of recently deceased Steve E. Vargo; loving mother of Gary, Larry, Ricky Smith, and the late Steven and Darryl; devoted grandmother of Nathan and great-grandmother of Ayden; cherished daughter of the late John Henry and Elizabeth “Bessie” (nee: Barnett) Flannery. She was preceded in death by dearest twin sister Maggie, sisters Elsie and Emogene, and half-brother Burnis.

She is surrounded by the love of cherished relatives and friends.

Nola was born on June 8, 1932 in the beautiful mountains of Martin, Kentucky, and was a longtime resident of Chesterland, Ohio. She is fondly remembered as a loving spouse who was generous, energetic, and resilient, and was a second mother to her loving nieces and nephews. Nola was known for making the best homemade pies and she had an unwavering love of plants, flowers, and glassware. Her sense of fashion was always quirky and she was loads of fun. She single-handedly drove the entire neighborhood in one station wagon to Nela Park’s pool for entire summers and was rarely seen without her twin sister in the passenger seat. She was a longstanding member of Fowlers Mill Christian Church in Chardon.

Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, October 14, at 10am at the Funeral Home. Burial following at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chesterland. A Celebration of Life gathering and lunch will conclude at the Euclid Masonic Temple, 27271 Tungsten Road, Cleveland. All are welcome.

Family will receive friends to pay tribute to and celebrate the life of Nola at the DeJohn Funeral Home & Crematory of Chardon (formerly Ritondaro) 126 South St. (Rt. 44, south of Rt. 6/Chardon Square) Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm.

All donations will go directly to the care of the Vargo family.

  4. May God comfort the family in this time of loss. I have so many wonderful memories of the family . . . beginning in the late 60’s with the family at the Fowlers Mill Church. Remember many times visiting in the home of Steve and Nola. She was so thrilled when I moved to Kentucky and ended up marrying a Flannery relative from Floyd County, Kentucky. I got to visit with Nola’s father, John Henry, up Bucks Branch in Martin, KY. He knew of my father-in-law and talked about some of the Flannery history. Nola was so gracious, always giving gifts to my wife Pat and I. There were many times when we laughed together and times when we cried together. Nola/Steve and Maggie/Dick and families are all precious people. Certainly miss Nola and the others who have departed this life. I am thankful for the hope that Nola had in Jesus!!
