BARBARA E. (SMITH) WERCION (nee Carlson) age 97, beloved wife of the late George Smith; loving mother of Thomas G (Smith) deceased (loving companion Mary McPhee), Susan LaRiche (husband Ronald), Cynthia (Columbo) DiTomaso (husband Fred), and Sally Ward (husband Dubber “James”); devoted grandmother of 11 and great-grandmother of 22; cherished daughter of the late Roy and Louise (nee Dickard) Carlson; dearest sister of Roy “Os” Calson, D.D.S (wife Janice), and the late Doris Eckert (husband Robert deceased), James Carlson, D.D.S, and Mary Lou; dear aunt and great-aunt of many.

Barbara was born on January 25, 1929, in Cleveland, Ohio, where she graduated from Shaw High School in 1947. She later met her husband George and had 4 beautiful children. Strong in her faith she found a cherished community in St Paschal Baylon, where she sang in the choir and was an active member of the Ladies’ Guild. She had a deep love for gardening, both in her own time and as a member of the Highland Heights Garden Club.

She was an avid sports fan, especially of the Indians, and games could only be better with popcorn, jellybeans, or something sweet close at hand. She enjoyed playing cards and listening to music from the 50’s and 60’s.

She lived her life with strength and clarity, treasuring every family gathering and each visit from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always eager to hear what everyone had been up to. She was delighted to find a great bargain and cherished the time spent shopping with her daughters. At times, she would fondly reminisce about secretly entering her family into cooking competitions, proudly walking away with numerous wins.

She will be remembered for her strong-willed, hardworking, funny and intelligent spirit, as well as her unmistakable sense of conviction, never shy about sharing her thoughts with those she loved. Her deep devotion to her family and her faith will be profoundly missed.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in memory of Barbara to the Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome Association (CVSA).

Celebration of Life Service Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 11AM DeJohn Funeral Home (28890 Chardon Road, Willoughby Hills, OH 44092). Burial following at a later date at All Souls Cemetery.
