Bernice M. Barris

BERNICE M. BARRIS (nee Sebek) age 104 1/2, beloved wife of the late Robert L. Barris; loving mother of Susan Chiari (husband Rodolfo deceased), Robert J. (wife Deborah deceased) and Charles B. (wife Christine); devoted grandmother of Adam B. (wife Kelley), Ashley B. Kanlic (husband Elvis), Jonathan F., Christopher B., Matthew B. and the late Roberto A. Chiari; cherished daughter of the late Claude and Nettie (nee Martinek) Sebek; dearest sister of the late Norman and Robert Sebek (wife Helen deceased); dear aunt and great-aunt of many. Preceded in death by many of her feline companions. Survived by her feline companion, Kitsa.

Bernice was born in Cleveland, Ohio on March 29, 1921 and a 1939 graduate of Euclid High School. This intelligent and self-made woman continued her education at Cuyahoga Community College, earning a degree in nursing and the title of RN. She and her husband, Robert, put down roots and lovingly raised three children. As their family grew, they were delighted with the addition of each grandchild.

Establishing herself early in life as a hard-working Renaissance lady, Bernice became a pilot. She earned the rank of Lt. Colonel of the Civil Air Patrol and became an active member of the Lake Erie 99s, an association for women pilots. She was also a member of Eastern Star and, utilizing her nursing skills, became a volunteer with the American Red Cross. Further breaking barriers for women, she was a valuable member of a fast pitch softball team. Beyond her love of classical and big band era music, she performed with the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus for more than 25 years. Bernice spent many enjoyable hours gardening and playing with her cherished Siamese cats.

Always a fascinating lady and joy to be around, family and friends would describe Bernice as social with a sense of humor and one who never backed down from a challenge. At the age of 104 1/2, Bernice earned a new set of wings, passing on to her heavenly life. Family requests that you join them in honoring and celebrating such a remarkable woman.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Bernice to the Bernice Barris Scholarship Fund of the Lake Erie 99’s and mailed to 1975 Bromton Drive, Cleveland, Ohio 44124.
