How can you grieve for someone who lived 102 years?
Dorothy Kurrent passed away on June 13, 2025, and was born on November 9, 1922. In those many years, Dorothy lived a life full of love, laughter and fun. Born to parents Ludwig and Mary Ogrinc, and growing up with late brother Ronald, she spent her childhood roller skating, riding her bike and reading. She often would meet her grandfather, Paul Cesnik, after his work at The Collinwood Railroad Yards and walk him home. On school breaks or during the weekend, she would spend time on the family farm with her grandmother Barbara.
Dorothy had a life-long love of nature, spending time exploring the farm, watching butterflies or admiring daffodils in the spring. Music was a big part of Dorothy's life too, be it singing in the kitchen with the family or as a member of Jadran, a Slovenian singing society. Dorothy was also a nearly 85-year member of Slovene National Benefit Society (SNPJ) Lodge 604. In fact, she even outlived her SNPJ insurance policy.
She met her husband, Joseph, at a dance at the Slovenian Waterloo Home. Married for over 70 years, they raised three sons: James, David and Stephen Kurrent. Her family included granddaughters Megan Fargnoli and Amanda Kurrent, and step-granddaughter Judie Morton, great-grandchildren Jarrod Perkins, Caitlyn and Thomas Fargnoli and step great-grandchildren William and Westley Morton. Extended family includes her sister-in-law Arlene Ogrinc, as well as several generations of cousins and many friends.
Family was always important to Dorothy, as were crossword puzzles, cards, singing or gently teasing anyone she cared for. Dorothy often said she was lucky to have the family she had.
And as a fitting end, Dorothy was able to share her last afternoon with her three sons. During the visit, her boys sung to Dorothy, said goodbye and made sure she knew how much she was loved. She passed peacefully and quietly the next morning. Waiting to have that special moment together one final time is all you need to know about Dorothy. Her sharp wit and gentle humor never faded, nor did her voice, especially when singing "You Are My Sunshine." As you watch the video below of Dorothy singing, please sing along, because nothing would have made Dorothy happier.
The family would like to thank the wonderful and caring staff of the Slovene Home for the Aged, as well as the staff from Hospice of the Western Reserve, for making her final years comfortable and full of love and laughs.
So, you see, you really can't grieve someone like Dorothy, because she lived a full and wonderful life. To celebrate her memory and her love of nature, take a moment to look at the clouds in the sky, take a moment to smell a flower or take a moment to listen to the song of a bird, for that's how to forever remember Dorothy.
Mom, you are OUR sunshine, always.
