EILEEN R. VEHAR (nee Rosenbaum) age 78, passed away peacefully on April 16 after gracefully coping with the challenges of Parkinson's disease for 17 years. She was the beloved wife for 56 years of Raymond; loving mother of Kenneth (Kristine), Ryan (Jackie), Christine Jutte (Colonel Andrew, USAF) and Michael (Susan); devoted grandmother of Megan Wise (Justin), Ricky, Jillian, Bethany and Peter Vehar, Alex, Joseph, Samantha and Natalie Jutte, Ellie and Josie Vehar; cherished daughter of the late Edward Rosenbaum and Irene (nee Bonham); dearest sister of James Rosenbaum (Pat), Lois Satow (Jay), Ken Rosenbaum (Pam) and the late Mary Ann Kocaja (Ray deceased); dearest sister-in-law of Thomas and JoAnn Vehar and John and Delores Vehar; dear aunt, great-aunt, cousin and friend of many.
Eileen was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 9, 1947, and was a graduate of Nazareth Academy in the class of 1965 and the former Notre Dame College of Ohio in 1969. In college, she was the recipient of the St. Catherine’s Medal in recognition of her exemplary leadership, scholarship, faith, and service. As a senior, she completed her student teaching in mathematics at Beachwood High School where she met the love of her life, Ray. They married in 1970 and welcomed and raised four children: Kenny, Ryan, Christine, and Michael.
Guided by her faith and Roman Catholic upbringing, Eileen was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She created a welcoming home where all felt secure and loved. She delighted in celebrating the milestones of others and organized memorable week-long summer vacations for her family and the families of her siblings and cousins.
Outside the home, Eileen was an active member at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, their Catholic parish in Cleveland. While serving as president of the Mother’s Club, she led numerous successful fundraisers for the parish school children. Her involvement with Notre Dame College’s Alumni Association, blessed her with the opportunity to humbly meet St. Mother Teresa in 1978. As a dedicated Aluma, she was the recipient of the “Woman of the Year” award in 1994 for her service to her family, community, and college.
Eileen dedicated her career to teaching mathematics and retired from Mayfield High School in 2008. Known for her compassion and her ability to see the potential in each of her students, she motivated struggling students by “smothering them with love.” Eileen’s unbiased approach to education made her a favorite teacher to many.
At age 61, Eileen was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and later developed lymphoma. She was lovingly cared for by her husband, Ray, for 10 years at home. As Eileen’s disease progressed, Eileen’s son Kenny, his wife Kris, and their children unconditionally cared for her in their home for 4 years, while graciously welcoming Eileen’s hired caregivers and frequent visitors. Eventually, Eileen transitioned into a nursing facility where she grew fond of her caregivers that she depended on daily - and they grew fond of her. Regardless of Eileen’s location, Ray was always by her side.
No matter the event, Eileen was the “life of the party.” She loved to dance—being the first one on the dance floor and the last to leave. She always brought smiles and warmth to everyone she met. She saw the best in people and enriched the lives of those around her. Eileen's lifetime devotion to family, friends, faith, and especially those in need will be missed dearly. May her loving example continue to be an inspiration for all.
The family is grateful to everyone for their love and support. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Eileen to Sisters of Notre Dame, 13000 Auburn Rd., Chardon, OH 44024, or by clicking HERE.
