Joan E. Spangler, age 84 of Chardon, passed away, peacefully, surrounded by her family, June 13, 2025 at Ohman Family Living at Holly. Born June 29, 1940, in Canton, OH to Thomas and Christine (nee: Lann) Snyder, she had been a longtime area resident. Joan was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Chardon. She also appreciated her friendship with Fr. Burkley, Prior of St. Lucy/St. Edward and was active in church ministries with Fr. Jay McPhillips of St. Helen. Joan attended St. John College (now Ursuline) and attained her BSN-RN. Joan worked night shift for Cleveland Clinic while starting a family and then after moving to Russell Twp., worked over 35 years for West Geauga Schools as a nurse.
Joan and her husband, Paul, started a successful machining company, Drummond Corporation in 1979. She enjoyed world travel, especially trips with her grandchildren. She also loved decorating for the holidays and hosting the entire family for a festive dinner. She was a very generous person and would always help someone in need. More recently she enjoyed going out to dinner, shopping and treasuring time with her companion, Bob McIlroy.
Survivors include her children: Sandra (Mark) O’Conner of Akron, Paul (Bonnie) Spangler of Chesterland, Sharon L. Perko of Geneva, and Linda (Eric) Hammonds of Novelty, OH; grandchildren: Elizabeth & Amber O’Conner, Robyn (Alec) Bojalad & Amanda Spangler, Christine (Drew) Kennedy, Erika Perko, Alex & James Hammonds; great granddaughter Hazel Joan; sisters Karen Vargo & Janice (John) David, in-laws MaryAnn Spangler and Robert (Donna) Spangler along with many extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Paul, son-in -law Thomas Perko, brother-in-law William Vargo, niece Denise Vargo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10am on June 18, 2025, at The Church of St. Mary, 401 North Street in Chardon with burial to follow at Overlook Cemetery in Parkman. Calling hours will be from 5-8pm on June17 at the DeJohn Funeral Homes & Celebration Center 12811 Chillicothe Rd, Chesterland, OH 44026 and from 9am to 10am at the church prior to the Mass.
