KAR WAR CHAM, age 88, a long-time resident of Willoughby Hills, Ohio, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026, with his beloved wife by his side.
Born on September 5, 1937, in Canton, China, he married his wife, Fung Oi Cham (née Chan), in 1959, and together they shared 67 years of marriage. He completed four years of college in Hong Kong and worked as a primary school teacher, where he taught all subjects, before coming to the United States in 1969 to build a new life through hard work and dedication.
Over the years, he worked as a gear cutter at Skidmore Gear Company and as a chef in a Chinese restaurant. He later became an automotive upholsterer for Fisher Body Division of General Motors, where he worked for 16 years until the plant’s closure led to his retirement on April 1, 1993.
He and his wife were known for their close bond, often dressing in matching outfits and enjoying shopping for bargains together. They loved traveling the world and shared a deep appreciation for good food, with a special fondness for traditional Chinese dishes. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors and tending to his yard.
Kar had a lifelong passion for music and high-fidelity sound. He also enjoyed playing the harmonica. He invested significantly in audio equipment, favoring classic vacuum tube systems for their warmth and purity. He took great pride in his collection of master-cut vinyl records, valuing their superior quality and authenticity, and often spent peaceful hours immersed in music, especially classical pieces.
He enjoyed staying connected to the world through his computer, regularly reading news from China and Hong Kong and watching cooking programs to learn about different cuisines and techniques.
He experienced profound loss with the passing of his only son, David M. L. Cham, who was born on January 4, 1960, and passed away on July 30, 2014.
Kar is survived by his devoted wife, Fung Oi Cham.
