PATRICIA "PAT" ANNE MCGUAN (neé Tyler) age 83, beloved wife of Sean for 56 years; loving mother of Sean Jr. (Hope), Martin (Amy), Michael (Stephanie), Kathleen (Kyle) Fleming, and Austin (Cassandra); devoted grandmother of Anabel (Charlie) Espy, Colman McGuan, Clara (fiancé Josh Litten) McGuan, Patrick McGuan, Moira Grace McGuan, Eleanor Fleming, James Fleming, Coco McGuan, Tilly McGuan, and Austin John McGuan; cherished daughter of the late Frederic and Clara (neé Ratino) Tyler; dearest sister of Marilyn "Toby" (Jerome) Rampelt; and dear sister-in-law and aunt of many.
Pat was born on July 30, 1942, to Clara and Frederic in Cleveland, Ohio. Upon graduating from Regina High School, she pursued her bachelor's degree in Elementary School Teaching at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Pat returned to Ohio to attend John Carroll University for her master's degree in Gifted Education. She put the education she received to good use, becoming an elementary school teacher at Mayfield Road Elementary School. Pat met the love of her life, Sean, at a professional meeting, and the two were happily married in 1969. They settled in Lyndhurst, Ohio, where they remained for 56 years.
She brought five wonderful children into the world and decided to put her teaching career on hold for fifteen years, not only to raise, but to teach, her children, always searching for opportunities to provide them with greater enrichment. She was more than qualified, and her efforts bore fruit as her children went on to find satisfying careers and build beautiful families of their own. Pat derived the greatest joy from the knowledge that her children were fulfilled and happy.
Pat returned to teaching later in life, becoming a middle school teacher in the Gifted program at Auburn Middle School, later known as LaMuth Middle School. Her creativity shined as a teacher, and she adored instructing her students in English and grammar, allowing her to share and pass on her love of language with others. Though Pat was undoubtedly an extremely bright individual, she was always humble and mild mannered. She could easily recall names and relationships between others from days long past, making life-long friends wherever she went.
Pat was devoted to education and her family, as well as her faith. She was a parishioner at St. Paschal Baylon Catholic Church for ten years, having previously been a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. Pat enjoyed taking road trips with her family, camping in the American West, bike riding, and antiquing with Sean. She relished classical music and literature, and she fondly remembered listening to Dylan Thomas's recitation of "A Child's Christmas in Wales" as a family on Christmas morning. Pat passed away in faith on October 13, 2025, leaving behind the legacy of a woman dedicated to building an appreciation of literature and the arts in the next generation.
