Sister Mary Margaret Kerr, SND
(formerly Sister Mary St. Maurus)
Professed August 16, 1954
Margaret was the youngest of the six children born to Maurice and Edith (Ford) Kerr on March 3, 1934, in Cleveland. She joined her siblings in their Cleveland Heights home in St. Ann Parish, where the children attended school and received the sacraments. Margy was playful, full of energy, delighted in learning and participating in any sport. While a student at Notre Dame Academy in Cleveland, she realized that becoming an aspirant would help her move into religious life faster. Margy entered the community as a postulant on February 2, 1952. At investment, she received the name Sister Mary St. Maurus.
She earned a bachelor’s degree from St. John College in Cleveland and a master’s degree from John Carroll University. She was first assigned to teach in primary grades but found her true classroom calling with junior high students. Sister ministered in parish schools in the dioceses of Cleveland, Youngstown and Arlington, Virginia. Perhaps she was best remembered as an eighth-grade math teacher and an innovative computer instructor who met the needs of students of all ages.
After serving at St. Agnes School and Parish in Arlington for over 20 years, Sister Margaret moved back to Chardon, working with students in the Notre Dame Skills Lab and at the hospitality desk at Hillcrest Hospital. She carried a spirit of joy and welcoming wherever she went. Throughout her life, she remained close to her big and loving family. Visits were “events” remembered with great fondness. Sister Margaret lived her faith and love for the God whom she served with all the energy of her whole self.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 13, 2026 at the Sisters of Notre Dame Center. It will be live-streamed. Visitation will be from 9:30 until Mass begins.
