Wallace P. Havenhill

Wallace Patrick (Rick) Havenhill, 80, passed away peacefully among family on December 4, 2022. Wallace was born to the late Asher Havenhill, M.D. and Catherine Havenhill (Smith) on April 2, 1942 in Carmel-by-the-Sea in Monterey County and grew up in Fresno, CA. Wallace attended California State Polytechnic University where he studied mathematics and physics, and was a member of the mathematics society Kappa Mu Epsilon. After graduating, he served in the Peace Corps from 1966 to 1969. Stationed in the Philippines, he taught mathematics to elementary school children. It was during his time here that he met Aida Sulit, his wife of 55 years.

After his Peace Corps service, the Havenhills moved to Ohio, ultimately settling in Cleveland Heights. Wallace obtained a master’s degree from Cleveland State University in mathematics, and taught mathematics and computer science for the Cleveland Public School System until 2004. Highlights while teaching included coaching students for math contests, learning other languages from his foreign exchange students, and setting up the first computer labs in the schools across the system. Wallace loved puzzles, gardening, science fiction, and activities with his family.

Besides Aida, Wallace leaves behind daughter Maria Havenhill and son in-law Michael Laurich, daughter Ann Havenhill and son in-law Daniel O’Neill, son Eric Havenhill and daughter in-law Meredith Havenhill (Hicks), grandchildren Sara, Emily, Nathan, and Kaylee, brother Roy Havenhill and sister in-law Kay Havenhill, niece Michelle Davis (Latham) and nephew Mark Latham. Besides his parents, Wallace is predeceased by his sister Susan Havenhill, sister Pamela Latham (nee Havenhill), brother in-law Rodney Latham, and nephew Michael Latham.

The Havenhills wish to thank Cedarwood Plaza and The Hospice of Western Reserve for their compassionate care.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, December 15, 2022 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at DeJohn-Flynn-Mylott Funeral Home located at 4600 Mayfield Road, South Euclid, OH 44121.

The funeral Mass will be on Friday, December 16, 2022 at 11am at Sacred Heart of Jesus located at 1545 South Green Road, South Euclid, OH 44121. The burial will take place at Lake View Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve (17876 St. Clair Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44110).
