JOB DESCRIPTION: FUNERAL DIRECTOR
Reports to: CEO
Position Summary
The Funeral Director has primary responsibility for collaborating directly with families to arrange and deliver personalized funeral services. The Funeral Director works closely with internal and external partners. The ideal candidate has at least three years of successful experience as a Licensed Funeral Director in the State of Ohio.
Position Objectives
To adhere to the Mission and Values of the DeJohn Funeral Services by providing a personalized and flexible array of services to grieving families that meet their needs and exceed their expectations; creating an atmosphere that allows for grieving and healing by providing a ministry of consolation to the family and the public
To meet and exceed all standards of excellent service in the manner in which the funeral is arranged, conducted, supervised and executed
To provide informatio+n and support to incoming calls from grieving families by introducing them to the services, products, and pricing available from the funeral home (in at-need and pre-need circumstances) and thereby promote the reputation and growth of the business
To provide products to families that meet their needs and expectations, thereby increasing satisfaction and enhancing the funeral home’s financial performance
Responsibilities (Non- Inclusive)
- Respond to the first call for the physical removal of the deceased from the place of death
- Coordinate with the medical examiner, hospice, various other medical personnel as necessary, with or without the assistance of other staff. May involve weekend, evening, or holiday calls
- Lead arrangement meetings with the family of the deceased
- Educate families on available services and products to provide a dignified and personalized funeral.
- Know and present all options for funeral celebrations to families
- Direct, coordinate, arrange and supervise all aspects of the funeral service which may include:
- Coordinating with the principals involved in the service
- Organizing pallbearers, reserve seating
- Preparing music, contracting and coordinating with musicians
- Assisting families with the selection and purchase of funeral merchandise
- Assist with the preparation of death notices and obituaries
- Preparation of death certificates
- Preparation of death notices
- Obtaining and coordinating presidential memorial certificates, flags and honor guards
- Arranging for grave openings and closings
- Assuming responsibility for oversight of all service activities
- Arranging cortege and driving the necessary funeral vehicle
- Determining and assisting in fulfilling any special needs of family or clergy
- Supervising and directing the activities of all funeral assistants assigned to the funeral services
- Ordering certified copies of death certificates, as requested by the family
- Entering the file into funeral software
- Completing necessary paperwork for insurance claims, veteran’s documents, pre-need contracts
- Assisting placing bodies in state at various chapels, airport runs
- Loading and unloading caskets from vehicles
- Represent the funeral home to the public by working with student groups, tours of the facility, visits to schools, etc.
- Maintain and organize complete and accurate records
- Uphold a presence in the community through membership in and attendance at various organizations (e.g., Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus, church, etc. and local events
- Accomplish all assigned duties with strict adherence to the laws, rules and regulations established by the State of Ohio, including standards of professional conduct; the Federal Trade Commission, the Department of Labor; the Department of Health; and any other regulatory agency with enforcement authority over the funeral industry
- Perform “other duties” as required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of funeral home software
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Customer service skills Sales and marketing training/ experience
- Knowledge of basic business and management principles
- Ability to work successfully as a member of a team
- Ability to work independently under pressure
- Ability to manage time and successfully organize competing priorities
- Willingness to take direction
- Ability to work weekends, holidays and overnight on-call.
- Maintain a clean and orderly appearance and environment in the funeral home
- Comply with dress code as outlined in the employee handbook
Physical Activity Level
High- Standing, walking, lifting 50 or more pounds, room set up and take down, work outdoors
Education and Licensure Requirement
B.A. or B.S. with a current license from the State of Ohio to provide funeral services
or B.S. in Mortuary Science for Funeral Directors and Embalmers
Experience
Three to five years experience preferred
