DeJohn-Flynn-Mylott Funeral Homes & Crematory was pleased to celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2019 as we continue to assist families dealing with death and celebrating the lives that are most significant to them.
“Any business that can celebrate 150 years is a tremendous accomplishment. Even though we are not the same family owned as in 1869, our DeJohn family has carried on the continuity of Flynn-Froelk-Mylott efforts to serve families during some of the most difficult days of their lives. While other funeral homes have closed we continue to grow and take pride in continuing the Flynn-Froelk-Mylott legacy,” said Ross DeJohn Jr. CEO and Funeral Director.
Since purchasing the funeral home from the Mylott family in 1986, Ross DeJohn Jr has continued to position DeJohn-Flynn-Mylott for growth and development through the years with his innovative ideas as the industry endures cultural and social changes. Ross kept the funeral home ahead of the curve by developing its community room and catering services to better serve families. He coordinated with his wife, Patty DeJohn, to care for families beyond the service through bereavement care and grief counseling to be the funeral homes on staff grief therapist.
“Our greatest accomplishments have taken our business into the next century as we provide care for families beyond the funeral service with our bereavement and grief services. We have also grown to four locations across Northeast Ohio – while adding new services along the way. Our next generation of funeral directors is demonstrating our future has a lot of potential,” he added.
DeJohn-Flynn-Mylott is one of the few funeral homes in Cleveland to have an on-site crematory which enables us to control the process of cremation from start to finish. Our professionally trained staff handle each cremation with care and having our crematory on-site allows us to accommodate for all faith backgrounds as well as giving you the opportunity to witness or participate in the cremation process. All of this gives our families peace of mind knowing their loved one never leaves our care.
As part of the innovative services offered at DeJohn-Flynn-Mylott Funeral Homes, Ross Jr brought the first funeral home Therapy Dog, Magic to Cleveland 11 years ago. As the primary handler of therapy dogs Magic and Coco, Ross helps provide comfort to grieving families during the funeral service as well as brighten spirits by visiting local hospitals, hospices, and schools throughout the year. Sadly, Magic died near the end of 2018 and the loss of his presence is still felt among staff and families served.

Ross DeJohn Jr talks with students about the important jobs Magic & Coco have as Therapy Dogs.
As pet parents themselves, DeJohn family felt there was an underserved need for pet families to have choices when dealing with the loss of a pet. For more than 10 years, DeJohn Pet Services has provided a dignified farewell to beloved family pets. Our Pet Loss Professionals help guide you through the options to create a meaningful tribute and memorial that is unique to the life you shared with your pet. They also guide families to healing on their grief journey. DeJohn Pet Services has cared for family pets large and small, from birds, hamsters, ferrets, lizards and snakes to dogs and cats. No other funeral home in Northeast Ohio has provided deathcare for both areas.
DeJohn-Flynn-Mylott Funeral Homes has expanded twice in recent years by adding locations in Chardon, taking over the Ritondaro Funeral Home, and building the DeJohn Funeral Homes & Celebrations Center in Chesterland. The Celebrations Center features a spacious modern foyer and gathering area with an adjoining café room, outdoor patio with fireplace and serves as a state-of-the-art facility for many types of life celebrations. His innovation continues to drive the future of the funeral home by expanding how DeJohn-Flynn-Mylott can better serve families.
Since the opening of the Celebrations Center, we have hosted several free community events including hosting a Cleveland History discussion with Dan Ruminski (donations collected for Little Mended Hearts of Northeast Ohio*), a special presentation on the assassination and funeral of President Abraham Lincoln (with an actual replica of the coffin in which President Lincoln is buried) and flag retirement ceremony with local VFWs and boy scout/girl scout troops as well as their annual Pet Blessing in October and Tree of Remembrance ceremonies for Human and Pet families in December. *Little Mended Hearts treated a nephew of the DeJohn family, so it means something more to be able to give back to an organization that has given new hope to their family. DeJohn Funeral Homes has truly become a family business. Joining the business in the late 1990s, Ross DeJohn III became the third generation of DeJohn family ownership and fifth generation of family ownership for the firm. In 2016, the family business grew again as Melissa DeJohn Capretta joined her father, Ross Jr., mother, Patty DeJohn and brother, Ross III at the funeral home as a Funeral Director Apprentice and Community Liaison.
Teamwork is a key element in the success of the DeJohn Funeral Homes as well as respectful communication and accountability to fulfill the needs of a growing business and of our clients. All of the DeJohn famliy had experience in the corporate and sales areas before dedicating themselves to the funeral and deathcare profession. Each has said that while successful in business, the ministry of caring for and serving families was a calling. It’s a ministry… not a job.
DeJohn-Flynn-Mylott Funeral Homes & Crematory continues to be proactive and responsive to the needs of the communities it serves. Always seeking the best way to ease the burden on families, DeJohn-Flynn-Mylott is adept at listening to families and asking questions to find answers that brings our clients more balance, fulfillment and relief.
