William K. McClung (age 87), of Cleveland Hts. Beloved husband of wife Mary (nee Wyatt) and the late Martha (nee Blyth); devoted father of Don (wife Celeste) and Bill (wife Allison); cherished grandfather of Marissa, Mackenzie and Carlie; and dear stepfather of Julia Almaguer and Thomas Palmer.
Bill passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 19, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.
Beloved by his family and friends, Bill dedicated his life to the service of others. From coaching little league teams, President of the Mayfield City School Board for 16yrs, to President of the Highland Hts. City Council. He was always looking for ways to contribute to his community.
After serving in the US Air Force, Bill embarked on a successful, 40yr career with The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company. A self-made man, he began work in the personnel department, ultimately rising to the role of Sr. VP of Regional Service for Northeast Ohio. He mentored his employees throughout that period, opening doors for many.
In retirement, he continued in service as the President of the Board at Marymount Hospital, by volunteering for The Greater Cleveland Growth Association (now The Greater Cleveland Partnership), by counseling budding entrepreneurs for SCORE, and recording newspaper readings for the blind at The Cleveland Sight Center.
An avid sportsman, Bill loved to play tennis as often as possible with his buddies at Mayfield Racquet Club. And annually for the last 30 years, he’s attended the NCAA Basketball Championships with family and friends. Bill lived his life by the values of compassion, loyalty and integrity and his ongoing, selfless passion for helping others remains a legacy that all of us can embrace. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
